My Favorite Books of 2018

posted Jan 4, 2019, 12:22 PM by Holly Castille

I read 48 books in 2018. Maybe I can hit 50 this year! Here are my Five Favorites (but six because I just can't stop):

Titles are linked to the CHS library "card."
  1. What to Say Next by Julie Buxbaum - I always love when autism is portrayed as the asset, not the liability
  2. The Moth Presents All These Wonders edited by Catherine Burns - I love the podcast, love the written collection of different people's stories
  3. Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler - a dystopian near-future, with the dystopia caused by Climate Change
  4. Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu - medicine for our #metoo times
  5. All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque - there aren't enough WWI books, and this one eloquently speaks for all wars, all sides
  6. I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sanchez - ok so the narrator as a promising writer is cliche, but then again, who else can tell the story better? I see my students in this book and l love to hear that voice.

Extra Credit Opportunity

Many students were nostalgic about Reading Rainbow...but Levar Burton can still read a story to you on his podcast! Choose a story and listen. Write a description that includes a short summary of the story, why you think he chose it for his podcast, and your own reflection on it. http://www.levarburtonpodcast.com/

Get the New Connally App, and Sign Up for ENGL III Reminders

posted Oct 16, 2016, 10:54 AM by Holly Castille

My daughter made me leave the football game during the fourth quarter, but by the time I got home I knew the exciting results because the new Connally app on my phone sent an alert.

When you have the app on your phone, go to Contacts and find me in the English section; from there you can opt in for alerts from me. Students seemed grateful when I promised to remind them of picture day this week, and I hope they are just as grateful when I remind them about scheduled library visits and test grade assignments.

Extra Credit: PSAT Practice

posted Sep 23, 2016, 1:37 PM by Holly Castille

Test day for all juniors at CHS is Oct. 19! If you signed up for the PSAT (if you didn't, you'll be taking the ASVAB that day), practice books are here! Get major grade extra credit in ENGL III for completing Sections 1-2, pages 7-41. You must use the answers on page 62 and show that you checked which ones you got wrong. Class credit is for the effort and reflection towards improvement, not on your practice score. Must be turned in before Oct. 19. (If you want it to go on your first 9 weeks grade, I need it before Oct. 14).
